Are we moving forward on gender balance in the leadership of the world’s top companies?

New research by Weber Shandwick shows that gender inclusion drives company reputation and the proportion of women in senior level positions, with the “Most Admired Companies” in the world possessing over twice the percentage of women in senior management as those with weaker reputations (17% against 8%).

According to the results of the Gender Forward Pioneer (GFP) Index, published by global communications firm Weber Shandwick, companies that are recognized with “most admired” reputation status by their industry peers have a higher proportion of female leaders, albeit well below gender parity. Yet the index also shows that only 10.9% of the senior executives of the world’s 500 largest companies, by revenue, are women. Of those companies, not one has an equal representation of men and women on their senior management teams, and nearly four in 10 companies (37.6%) have an all-male senior leadership team.

Gender Equality; Diversity and Inclusion

The report also highlighted the key industries for gender diversity and women’s leadership in the workplace, with the top industry for women in senior management being General Merchandisers. One-third of their senior executives are women. In stark contrast however industries such as diversified wholesales, shipping and textiles have zero women in senior management.
